Artist Statement

My visual art and writings invite the audience to join me in subliming our emotions and exploring our shared human nature, and together, we may all learn to be more understanding of this world and still find ways to be ourselves. My inspiration comes mainly from my personal experience, observations, and understanding of human beings’ existence in this world—the struggle we go through to survive (get by), thrive, and become happy and content.

In terms of visual art, I often use strong colors and mixed media. My artworks often feature reflective materials in the mixed media, especially color foil. Color foil tape/paper generates brilliant, flowy, changing colors as a person moves in the space to view the artworks from different angles, informing the audience that truth can be multi-faceted.

Artist's Bio

Kimvalrie Shaowen Neal (or Shao-wen Wang, A.K.A. Kim Neal or Kim Wang-Neal) is a Taiwanese American artist and writer, who decided to pack up her legal practice for a healthier lifestyle and turned to art creation in early 2022.

Kim is known for her bold use of colors and imagination, and being highly skilled at portraying facial expressions that both evoke emotions and invoke audiences to meditate on meaningful issues in life. Kim’s artworks and poetry internalize many Western and Asian cultural and philosophical concepts and explore shared human nature. Some of Kim's work demonstrates her whimsical humor—another approach to life.

Kim and her husband, Dan Neal (who is from Oregon, U.S.A.), met in Taipei, Taiwan, in 1998. They moved to New York State in 2008. Currently, Kim spends time between Taiwan and the U.S.A.
